Melchizedek and Biblical Chronology: King of Salem and Abraham's Initiation
The text discusses Biblical chronology, referencing Genesis 11:10 and following verses, and Benassai's work on New Testament chronology from Pistoia: Archeosofica. As reported by Josephus Flavius, according to tradition Melchizedek possesses both the Tiara and Crown (priestly and royal power), as well as rights by nature and conquest, Initiation and Examination. Eastern tradition portrays him as an ascetic who retreated to Mount Tabor where he had a cave; however, the historical figure is merely a shadow of a metahistorical reality expressed by the titles King of Justice and King of Peace, or Melchizedek מלכיצדק King of Salem מלךשלם. The city of Salem שלם, of which Melchizedek is King, only partially identifies with Jerusalem. It is the metahistorical city of Peace שלם, the complete and perfect metaphysical city or church that manifests only partially in world history. In this sense, according to historical chronicles, Melchizedek founded the first Temple in historical Jebus יבוס, the old biblical name for Jerusalem, which could thus become Uru-Salem, or foundation of Salem. Apart from these historical accounts, more or less accurate and subject to periodic revisions, the metahistorical meaning is expressed by Saint Paul's Letter to the Hebrews, which develops the messianic theme highlighted by Psalm 110 of David and taken up by the Essene communities of the time. For Saint Paul, the historical figure of Melchizedek, his creaturely aspect, is irrelevant and totally secondary compared to the eternal Reality that he manifests, being the progenitor of the Priesthood of the Messiah: "He is without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, made like the Son of God and remains a priest forever." From a metahistorical point of view, Melchizedek is an angelic being, the Gatherer of Light, through whom one can identify the Logos-Priest, Christ himself in his Angelic-Divine nature, who, to confer upon Abraham the grail initiation, manifests through a historical man, a Canaanite high priest. To give life to his solar Priesthood, to the flowing of Divine life of the Word through Christ and from Christ to Humanity, God himself, in his angelic-divine aspect expressed by Melchizedek, must graft himself into Humanity, specifically in Abraham and Sarah, and lay the foundations of his priesthood no longer human and mediocre, but divine and eternal. A priesthood whose High Priest will be the Messiah: Jesus the Christ. The Initiation to Abraham and Sarah The initiation conferred by Melchizedek to Abraham and Sarah is described in Genesis 14, verses 18, 19, and 20. These three verses are an autonomous textual element and tell us about the encounter between patriarch Abraham, the initiate, and Melchizedek, the initiator. "Meanwhile Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine: he was priest of God Most High (אלעליון El Elion) and blessed Abraham with these words: 'Blessed be Abram by God Most High, possessor (קנה qoneh) of heaven and earth, and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.' And Abraham gave him a tithe of all." Genesis 14:18-20. The preceding passage constitutes the main source we have for understanding Melchizedek's intervention. We note that the Priest King of Salem acts as an intermediary to establish, with a communion rite through the species of bread and wine, the Covenant between Abraham and God Most High. This Covenant involves the institution of God's Kingdom on Earth and, according to Genesis verses, is realized through two blessings: the first to Abraham and the second to God.
