The Sword Symbolism and God's Kingdom

Similarly, when meditating on the sword, it should not be conceived as any ordinary sword but as the symbol of the Sword of the Archangel Michael, the power of God's Word that separates good from evil.

THE ADVENT OF GOD'S KINGDOM

The sword is the symbol of an absolute power that is that of the Grail, and therefore refers to a metaphysical reality of Christic character whose tradition is lost in the mists of time and whose meaning and promise concerns the affirmation of Christ's kingdom on all the Earth. Being this a metaphysical reality, it is found under the veil of symbols, myths and allegories since the dawn of time. In ancient India, for example, we speak of the struggle between Indra and the dragon Varuna, in ancient Persia we find the eschatological struggle between Asmodeus and Sraosha to defend the woman Fravati who must give birth to a son, the Warrior King from Zoroaster's legacy crowned with a crown of 12 stars, in the Christian tradition we find the same legend in the Apocalypse narrated by John the Evangelist.

The same tradition is then found elsewhere in history making this reference to a metaphysical tradition. Without explaining these passages which are complicated, one can still easily understand that the sword symbolizes the authorization to affirm God's kingdom which is at the same time: the inner kingdom of God: the initiation of the human word to the Divine Word; the outer kingdom of God: namely the organization that the Supreme Being founds with the purpose of perpetuating His work on earth, and finally the transcendent kingdom of God: the kingdom of Heaven repeatedly affirmed in the gospels.

And how does the birth or affirmation of this kingdom of God in Humanity occur? First, it is understood that a battle must take place, a real battle in humanity. Above all, this realization is only for those who belong to the salvageable. It is ruthless but the action of Christ has divided into salvageable and non-salvageable, those who are salvageable are part of the Ekklesia. The kingdom of God is only for the elect. Similarly from an individual point of view in Man there is a luminous part that is associated with the salvific action of Jesus Christ and Mary, the part of oneself that will be saved and on the other hand at the moment there is a dark part that is under demonic influence and that before being destroyed will unleash a battle.

Mary's action in this process is fundamental because the kingdom of God in Man will be realized with the birth of Christ in Man, birth realized through the work of the heavenly mother, operating in the human soul thanks to Mary's action. In a certain sense therefore the very action of the Knight is to protect this Woman who will be the mother from whom he will be reborn. Moreover, the temporal glory of the earthly city does not erase heavenly goods, but sustains them but only if we do not doubt in the least to contemplate the image of her who, in heaven, is our mother (Galatians 4:22). De Laude novae militiae

For this reason if heavenly chivalry is under the patronage of the Archangel Michael, earthly chivalry is under the patronage of Mary as happens for example in the Templar case. We read for example in the prayer of the Templars written during imprisonment in 1308: "ever virgin Mary, salvation of those who are adrift, consolation of those who hope, you who comfort and defend those who repent of their sins, grant us counsel and defense; and protect your religious order, which was founded by blessed Bernard your holy confessor with other good men of the Holy Church of Rome, and dedicated to you, most holy and most glorious."

Similarly, the kingdom of God on earth, according to the vision of John the Evangelist will be established thanks to the action of a Woman clothed with the Sun who represents at the same time Mary, the Church and Sophia.

THE SYMBOLISM OF THE SWORD IN HISTORY

Therefore when reference is made to the symbolism of the sword in relation to the Grail, reference is made to the promise of the affirmation of the kingdom of God in Man first and consequently on earth and always associated with the figure of Saint Michael the Archangel. The symbolism of the sword in this context will follow exactly the evolution of this promise and it is in this sense that we will analyze it.
